What is the Sports and Entertainment Industry today?

The Sports and Entertainment Industry has always evolved throughout history, but the evolution has ascended to new heights in the last decade. The additions of social media, streaming platforms, and the advancement of technology in general have reshaped not only how the public consumes content, but also what is constituted as content today. The industry has arguably merged into one large category with numerous of sub-sections, rather than remained as separate areas of commercialization. While the two categories can be characterized differently as far as structure, products, and content, along with their own unique characteristics, they are consumed by the public in the same ways and ultimately organized and ran similarly. Whether its the NBA and the bulk of its revenue coming from its Media Rights deal, rather than in-person ticket sales. Or Coachella and Stage Coach being more than just the concerts, but the business deals that lead to sponsored parties in between sets. The Sports and Entertainment Industry has become more than just consuming content, but the ways in which the public experience, memorialize and in some cases even commercialize the content and or the Talent producing it.

The Industry has now become commercialized content and the different ways in which the public consumes it. Whether via streaming services, Web 3.0, NFTs, the metaverse, social media, tech, or live events, etc., "Content is King" has become the mantra of the industry and it is from there that content can be sub-categorized into what we have come to know are the traditional pillars. Sports, Music, Television, Movies, Social Media, Podcasts, Speaking Events, Fashion Shows, Media, Arts, NFTs, eSports, Books, Theatre all fall under the "content" category and its commercialization has become the Industry.

So what are the roles and jobs available in the industry? Well the answer to that depends on what side of the industry you are working on? Are you producing the content, distributing the content, or both? Are you Talent or are you a representative? Are you on the employer side or the employee? These are some of the questions that illustrate how large and small the Sports and Entertainment industry is, but also are the questions that one must ask in order to find their place within in.
